Makra is a nutrition app for runners. This policy explains what the app collects, why it is used, where it is kept, who processes it, and the choices you have. In short: we use your information to run Makra for you, and nothing about you is ever sold, advertised against, or shared for marketing.
Makra is built and operated by Ryan Egerton, an independent developer based in the United States ("Makra", "we", or "us"). For privacy questions or requests, email hello@makraapp.com.
To work out your daily targets, Makra needs to know some things about you: your date of birth, sex, height, weight, everyday activity level, your typical easy running pace, and the units you prefer. As you use the app you add more – the runs you log, the food you log, meals you plan for a future day, and meals you save as favourites.
We use this information to calculate your daily calorie and macronutrient targets, show your history, and back up and sync your plan across your devices. The nutrition calculations happen on your device, by rules, not by a service somewhere else.
Makra requires an account, created with Sign in with Apple. It is the only way to sign in, and it is what your data is attached to – without it, a new or replaced phone would mean starting over.
If you use Apple's Hide My Email, Makra only ever receives the relay address Apple generates. We never see your real email address, and the app does not email you.
Your profile, food logs, runs, planned meals, favourites and consent record are stored in Makra's database, hosted by Supabase in the United Kingdom. Encrypted copies of that database are taken nightly and deleted after 14 days.
This exists so your information survives a lost, broken or replaced phone – not so that anyone can look at it. Access is restricted to the account it belongs to.
Makra is a paid app. Subscriptions are sold and processed by Apple through your App Store account. Makra never sees your card details, billing address or payment information – Apple does not share them with us.
We use RevenueCat to keep track of whether a subscription is active, restore access on a new device, and understand subscription performance. RevenueCat receives your Makra account identifier and subscription and purchase status. It does not receive your profile, food logs, runs, planned meals, favourites, or searched location.
When you scan a barcode, Makra sends that barcode to Open Food Facts and may check USDA FoodData Central when no match is found. The request does not include your Makra profile, logs or account identifier.
When you ask Eat Out to find nearby places, Makra uses your location for that search. Approximate coordinates are sent through Makra's service to OpenStreetMap, and restaurant or food search terms are sent to FatSecret. Makra does not attach your profile, logs or account identifier to those requests, and it does not save the searched location to your account.
When the app crashes or hits an error, an automatic report is sent to Sentry so it can be fixed. Sentry also receives limited session-health information, such as whether an app session ended in a crash, so we can measure reliability. Reports contain technical detail such as device model, iOS version, app version, and where in the code the failure happened. They are stripped of account and request information and never intentionally include your profile, food logs, runs, or location.
Makra uses Apple, Supabase, RevenueCat, Sentry, Open Food Facts, USDA FoodData Central, OpenStreetMap, and FatSecret for the specific purposes described above. These providers may process information in countries outside your own, including the United States and United Kingdom.
We require service providers acting on our behalf to use information only to provide their service to Makra and to protect it to the same or an equivalent standard as this policy and applicable privacy law. We do not allow them to use Makra health or fitness information for advertising, marketing, or data-broker activity.
Where privacy law requires a legal basis, we process account, profile, nutrition, fitness, subscription, and lookup information because it is needed to provide the Makra service you request. We rely on consent where required for health-related information and device permissions, on our legitimate interest in keeping Makra secure and reliable for limited diagnostics, and on legal obligations where records must be kept.
Two options live in Settings, and they do different things:
You can export a spreadsheet (CSV) of your data first, from the same screen – profile, food log, planned meals, runs and favourites. Deleting the app from your phone removes the local copy but does not delete the account – use "Delete account & all data" for that.
Deleting a Makra account does not cancel an Apple subscription. Subscriptions are managed separately by Apple; cancel in your App Store account settings to stop future renewals and charges. Cancelling a subscription does not delete your Makra data.
Email hello@makraapp.com to exercise a privacy right. We may need to verify that the account is yours before acting on a request.
If you have iCloud Backup or another device backup enabled, your device may include Makra's on-device data in your own encrypted backup. That backup is controlled by you and your device platform, not by Makra.
Makra is intended for adults aged 18 and over and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18.
Makra provides general nutrition and fitness guidance for educational purposes only. It is not a medical device and does not provide medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Consult a qualified healthcare professional before making changes to your diet or exercise routine.
We may update this policy. Material changes will be reflected here and in the in-app Privacy & Data screen, and the date at the top will change.
